1. Nationalist movements sprouted up all around Asia in response to colonialism, or Western racism. Each nation that we have studied went through a self-strengthening movement. In essence these self-strengthening movements were much like the Meiji Restoration in that they often brought in a modernization national institutions such as the economy or education.
  2. The Japanese, because of their rapid development, went through a period of social dislocation, and thus had a back lash. A right-wing back lash.

Be sure to read pertinent pages of Pacific Century. Those are pp.153-159 (for Philippines), 159-162 (for Indonesia), 162-180 (for China), 180-183 (Vietnam), 183-190 (Korea), and 191-201 (Japan). These section should help most of you out. Some characters are only briefly mentioned if only at all. Some are not, i.e. Kim Gu. Nonetheless, these pages are packed with information that will help you get a fix on the people and especially the times in which they lived. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING THE MATERIAL PERTAINING TO YOUR CHARACTER.

The Boxer Rebellion (1900) in China
This is a short video showing some recreated footage and some not so accurate footage time wise (Note: winter clothing being worn by Japanese soldiers in August. YIKES!!!) Nonetheless, this is a good introduction to the sense of desperation felt by the Chinese regarding the future of their nation. Though it failed the Boxer's sought to free China of foreign domination. The Chinese nationalists that you cover sought other ways of 'self-strengthening' their nation.

Directions: You will be creating a fakebook page for a nationalist character
from the list below, or one you can find on your own. The only limitation is that they must be from East Asia (Myanmar to Japan; Mongolia to Indonesia). You will need to provide appropriate information that is relevant and accurate for your figure as evidenced in the research that you have launched.

Stage I (Due at the beginning of next class)

Name and Current Status: This is where you are to put who your character is and what he/she is doing/did in their respective nation. Be creative and informative with his/her
status.

Famous Quote: You must include a famous quote that has been spoken by
your individual or written. You need to search the text book, Pacific Century (pp. 162-201), library sources or use electronic sources for this information and it must be accurate and cited.

Friends Section: You must include at least three friends that your person knew
during his/her lifetime. The friends you select must have either
worked/lived/communicated with your character. Their relationship might have soured considerably.

*Networks, Birthday, Hometown, etc: You must fill in each item that is provided
for you on your template. If you have never used Facebook you need to include
at least three “networks” that your individual may be associated with. For
example you may use their city of birth, current city, college, high school,
likes/dislikes, etc. You need to include your person’s birthday, hometown, their
interests (at least four), their relationship status, and what they are looking
for… or simply why are they on Facebook? (at least two). Think about the next revolution or rebellion they want to start, book they want to write, or something related to their political and nationalist goals.

*Wall: Include at least three posts from friends that are text accurate. You must
include whom the post is from and the date when it was left. Those wall posts can be from a contemporary or a person of similar or opposing beliefs.
Information: Fill in the template with information about your individual. You
need to fill in an “about me” section. You must include where they gained their
education or if they did, accomplishments, their hobbies, etc.
  • Wait on these for a moment - I am not sure if fakebook can be used for this.
Photos: Finally, you must include at least five photos with a relevant caption for
your individual. These may be portraits, scenes, or actual photos taken of
your person in action… so in other words, illustrations from books or movies!facebook
